And it became pretty clear to me that there had been a very similar delay in his care, but even worse dynamics. The dean of SP2 told Penn otherwise, but Fierceton noted that the school had never shared what its definition was. [3], Before that happened, Fierceton withdrew from the scholarship on her own. But that was definitely a driving force for why I decided, ultimately, to withdraw because I felt like: OK, federal prison is no joke. RG: And all of us, no matter what our situation, are not completely safe from it. So those questions came like later on and were really a part of the initial interrogation. I was like: Great. Yeah. MF: I think youre right. And it became pretty clear to me that they had spoken to Carrie and or seen medical records. And the theme of private school definitely came up many times over the course of the last year and a half. MF: Its hard to say. And I think psychologically one way people feel safer about it is to say: No, that happens to other people. Raised in Chesterfield, Missouri, a West County suburb of St. Louis, she attended and graduated from the Whitfield School in Creve Coeur. Michael Hayes, who had prosecuted Morrison, told the Chronicle that "The more I learned, the less certain I became about what really happened. Fierceton is the 31st Penn student to be chosen as a Rhodes Scholar since the distinguished program's start in 1902. And youre getting instruction from a university official that thats how youre supposed to fill it out, thats what the definition says online. Smith said he believed the university had decided before it began investigating that Fierceton's abuse allegations were false and that she had fabricated them with the goal of finding an easier way into Penn or another elite school. The notation in her transcript remains. Fierceton began secretly documenting physical and psychological abuse by her mother, a radiologist, during her high school years. And I turned over all this information to his widow. And in the U.S., there is much more pressure to pull kids out of homes, right? Like, it seemed like an airtight case from my perspective. And so, Mackenzie, you and I were just talking offline. The mother of a friend of Fierceton's recalls that when she told Morrison on the phone that she "was not interested" in hearing what Morrison had to say, she got angry and confrontational. In the transcript, I wrote it was really just focused on: What happened the night you went into foster care? Both reports refrained from expressing an opinion about the truth of her abuse allegations. I have some of my own theories, but I want to hear yours. And so I was like, of course, Im going to respond again. RG: in America. It didnt, though, to the University of Pennsylvania. [2], Shortly after the Rhodes investigation began, Rafaelle was informed that Penn was proposing to revoke Fierceton's bachelors on the grounds of her apparent self-misrepresentation. And she was shocked. One possible explanation for this depressing story is that Mackenzie Fierceton fraudulently accused her own mother of gravely abusing and attempting to kill her, spent 22 days in the hospital to . She told them she felt that would be more likely to get an unbiased answer that way. And I think its striking to read that back and just see how clearly distressed and distraught I was in continuing to push on that series of questions about a really traumatic experience. You have a good education and youre clearly smart. Or is that it separates two into one? [2], For her senior year, Whitfield gave Fierceton a full scholarship. Who will spend some significant amount of time in poverty. I tried to help as much as I could. [7] The charges against Lovelace were dropped later for lack of evidence. She had bruises all over her body in different stages of healing an obvious sign of child abuse., No, I found it before. And then theres the part that felt like: I have no idea whats going to convince these people if I gave them medical records, I gave them forensic photos of me taken in the hospital, I gave them again like corroboration from professors of like how I described myself, from leaders in the FIGLY community. So you applied for your masters in social work and there was a question of whether to check the, what Ive learned is called the FGLI box: first-generation, low-income. [2], In the early 2000s the couple went through a protracted divorce during which a guardian ad litem was appointed to represent their daughter's interests at the custody hearing. [2], At the end of 2013, in the middle of her sophomore year, Fierceton was admitted to St. Luke's, where her mother worked, with a head injury. She was abused, but there is not enough blood." Yes, definitely. So one of the questions that you mentioned that they asked was about your essay , which, correct me if Im wrong, but I think it begins saying something along the lines of: Youre in the hospital, you looked in the mirror, and you couldnt recognize yourself, you couldnt recognize your features. RG: Anything in particular jump out at you after having read back over that transcript? So those questions really came later. The show was mixed by William Stanton. After the trial ended with Morrison prevailing and the agency ordered to remove her name from the child-abuse registry, Fierceton resolved to change her last name. And I dont remember exactly what their statement was, but they disputed it. Ultimately she decided to apply for the scholarship, in which she proposed to expand on the subject of her undergraduate thesis, the intertwining of the foster care and juvenile justice systems, to "continue to try to move forward in my life. I mean, youd been taking loss after loss, despite having the facts on your side. I think there were almost 30 of those letters again, very similar to who had given statements in the past to corroborate my abuse as well as leaders in the FGLI community saying yes, we started this community. And so, just the immediate reaction was like: Theres no way. And to me, Im like I am a household of one, so I am the only person in my family. "[2], Near the end of November Fierceton was named one of 32 Rhodes scholars from the U.S. for the year. [Laughs.]. In her reading, Tracy came across an article that congratulated Mackenzie Fierceton, a University of Pennsylvania graduate, on being named a Rhodes Scholar. And Im curious where you would pinpoint it, but I would guess that its The Philadelphia Inquirer story that started with an incorrect lead that said: Mackenzie Fierston grew up poor, something very close to that? Whereas white parents, a lot of times, it is much harder the bar is much higher to remove them from their homes because their whiteness or possibly class privilege or whatever identities that they have that might not fit a social worker or judges or whoevers involved perception of whose kids should be in the foster system. RG: So one of the questions that you mentioned that they asked was about your essay , RG: which, correct me if Im wrong, but I think it begins saying something along the lines of: Youre in the hospital, you looked in the mirror, and you couldnt recognize yourself, you couldnt recognize your features. Youre engaged in a lawsuit with Penn. Or is this something thats been overlooked? What happened after you went out of the hospital? But Mackenzie Fierceton is not a liar. To me, it seems like any reader of the English language would read that in a literary sense , RG: of its self-exploration, self-doubt, trauma. And then the focus shifted to the second box. Well, Mackenzie, thank you so much for joining me and sharing your story. And I was the one who uncovered my classmates death. If youd like to support our work, go to theintercept.com/give your donation, no matter what the amount, makes a real difference. MF: She, to my knowledge, has stuck by that. Medical records, records from child welfare services, corroborating letters from detectives and lawyers and elementary, middle, and high school teachers, childhood friends, professors basically everyone who had known me. And MacKenzie is the only one whos allowed to answer these questions. Mhmm. Mackenzie Fierceton of St. Louis was an Oxford student who had to offer her a Rhodes scholarship after the university caught her lying about her financial condition and her unpleasant teenage years on her application reports. She entered foster care only at the age of 17, after making a complaint of abuse against Dr. Morrison a complaint that a court later found not to be credible. But I think a lot of it stems from the current policies and practices of federal and local funding and what kind of programs theyre funding for kids. Uh, my lawyer. But the acclaim quickly devolved into acrimony as the university and the Rhodes Trust began questioning aspects of Fiercetons backstory. She also called herself a first-generation low-income student. Since we began the Reshuffled journey, any mention of foster care grabs my attention, the same with Tracy. And then again there was trouble getting him out of the basement. Teachers and parents at Whitfield had donated new clothing and school supplies for her. I tried to help as much as I could. And then to be so unanimously disbelieved and, at that point, this article was like a paragraph and a half. [2], In March 2014, Fierceton began keeping a secret diary[a] documenting her life and her ruminations on her situation, writing it in her bedroom closet by the light of her phone and hiding it behind a ventilation panel. Did she lie? But now looking back and rereading that article in the last year and seeing that it virtually had no information. I think youre right. She did not remember what had caused it. One of them, to me, felt pretty clear that it was probably from someone in my biological family, because it had photos of me; it had very specific information that very few people would have and I dont think many people would have random childhood photos of me. And then very quickly turn to very specific questions about different instances of abuse. Yes, to my lawyer who communicated it to me. And then throughout the now a year and a half process [laughs] of different sort of invented processes that happened, eventually the university was like: OK, I guess shes low-income. She arrives as a new student at Erinsborough High School and is connected to the . Betsy Reed is The Intercepts editor in chief. And now they have to face the fact that someone who looks like them, who shares all these identities with them, could be the source of all of this harm. The lawsuit, filed on behalf of Mackenzie Fierceton claimed that Penn officials targeted the grad student for retaliation after she became a key witness in a wrongful death lawsuit filed against the university. RG: And what was the first-generation community like on campus? And I dont remember all of the questions, but it was a really intense, rapid fire of really difficult and challenging questions. [1]:86, Morrison prospered in her medical career, and she provided generously for her daughter, allowing her to ride horses, go on river rafting trips and attend exclusive private schools, such as Whitfield, in nearby Creve Coeur, where annual tuition was almost $30,000. Cause I had assumed it was her. MF: And that is, I felt very defeated too. A petition to the county circuit court to have the arrest expunged was granted in a one-page order that attributed the arrest to "false information". So I felt pretty confident. And, in this case, almost everyone who was involved in the university administration are upper middle class or very wealthy, highly academically educated white women. A trial was held in early 2019 at which she, Fierceton, a psychologist and a DSS investigator testified. And it felt very similar that, well, this cant be real. Just a quick circling back, Im actually not sure if it was her who first reached out or if it was General Counsel Wendy White, because I later found out that they had a phone call about 36 hours after the article came out and seemed to talk pretty extensively, and then there were a lot of emails that happened. Fierceton was released after four days. Its just so obvious that you fit the criteria for low-income, but it seems like they feel like you dont fit it in the spirit of how they want it. As a result she withdrew from the Rhodes Scholarship; a sympathetic Penn faculty member has paid her Oxford tuition in its stead.[2]. And still, it was just like: Nope. And so the fact that shes continued pursuing you to me kind of demonstrates the entire case. Morrison's name was therefore ordered removed from the DSS registry. Its account focused on the Rhodes controversy, discussing her and Driver's suits near the end, and recalling some other recent instances of academic dishonesty, including one 2009 Harvard student whose largely fabricated high school records were only discovered when he had applied for a Rhodes Scholarship. So normally the term FGLI, its just an umbrella term for both. RG: And The New Yorker article also alluded to a few things that you had gotten loose with in a couple of paragraphs. So Im not sure if it was Penn who reached out to her or vice versa, which I think is also an important question in all of this. MF: Yeah. [2] They learned that SP2 had no real protocol for an emergency situation in the building. Our grad school had no specific definitions or instructions, but I did have a relationship with the associate director of admissions at the time. And thats an unfortunate reality so many survivors experience, not having a lot of documentation. So, to cut into the interview here real quick, I wanted to add that Mackenzie is referring to a letter sent to the Rhodes Trust in December 2020. "[25], "I cannot avoid the sense that Mackenzie is being faulted for not having suffered enough", Norton told The New Yorker. I think [its] called Penn First, I believe, and it seems like you socially spent a lot of time with them? She ruined her moms career. Its hard to say. "[2], That feeling was not mutual, Fierceton came to suspect. And then as the different internships, and then I went to get my masters in social work and all of this happened, I started to see that continue in different capacities while I was in different roles, seeing that theme in this relationship between foster care and the criminal justice system. Fine. MF: So [laughs] I feel like I could go on for hours about that. So normally the term FGLI, its just an umbrella term for both. MF: You know, in my personal experience, there were not very many kids who came from a background like me. [i] Ruderman corroborated that later to The New Yorker, saying she was paraphrasing Fierceton's self-identification as FGLI. In April, the trust's investigative committee produced a 15-page report praising Fierceton as "gifted, driven, and charismatic" but concluding ultimately that she "created and repeatedly shared false narratives about herself", noting in particular her references to injuries she was treated for in her September 2014 hospital stay that are not reflected in her medical records. Have you ever heard of her case? I identify with the FGLI umbrella term and definitely being a low-income student, but Ive never really called myself a standalone first-generation. RG: And how much did she challenge your medical condition after that beating? So you use what you have, uh, which are the definitions that were already out there. Fierceton applied for the Rhodes Scholarship with assistance from Penn's Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships. They took photographs of Caster's staircases and elevators, and interviewed witnesses and some of the Penn paramedics who had responded. So they didnt ask about that in this meeting. Like you said, I was called into a meeting. Yeah. And if those things are true, and youre also struggling in poverty, then something is deeply wrong with the system. It called attention to claims, such as the one in her application essay, that by the time she was six she "knew every police officer in my county by their first name", a claim Fierceton herself admitted was untrue and born of her fear of her biological family when she wrote it. ", Morrison said. Cause I had assumed it was her. ")[3], The OSC report also concluded that nothing in her academic record warranted the revocation of either degree. RG: Penn officials, of course, have said the interview was appropriate. Even though I had, again, written statements from two ICU nurses who took care of me saying: Yes, there was blood, [laughs] theres photographs, and there still was the argument of like, there wasnt enough blood or your face wasnt so distorted you could couldnt tell who you were. And I didnt get an answer. Because processes become Kafkaesque very quickly. Cops have accused the MTV star of stalking as well as violation of an order of protection. And its striking to see just the continuing to push of what happened. Jay Caspian Kang sounded similar themes in two different New York Times newsletters discussing Fierceton's story. Its a very different lifestyle. They had done their own investigation again, quotes on investigation and then I had submitted over a hundred pages of documents to them. His master's level university, Ivy College Pennsylvania, also failed to grant him the acquired master's degree . It was: Shes a spoiled little brat. Yes. If you want to give us additional feedback, email us at. But that was definitely a driving force for why I decided, ultimately, to withdraw because I felt like: OK, federal prison is no joke. How many people kind of fit that category that you interacted with, and how many kind of fit closer to your category, not just in your own interactions, but also in your research? She had seen no signs of abuse in the relationship and considered Fierceton to be the dominant personality in it. And so can you talk a little bit about your research? Her mothers name was entered into a registry of abusers. Yeah. [26] In the second, he wrote, "[y]ou could also conclude from Mackenzie Fierceton's story that there is no actual empathy within elite institutions unless you perfectly fit into the trauma hierarchy they have created, which preferences the types of overcoming-adversity stories they can place in a brochure. [2], Classmates who told Fierceton this also noted the similarities to another medical emergency in September 2018, when a 38-year-old SP2 graduate named Cameron Driver had suffered a cardiac event during a class in Caster's basement. And it just felt pretty devastating to me, because for so long I hid everything, Id been so ashamed, and I already felt so much guilt in coming forward then. woman who won a coveted scholarship in the US to study at Oxford after claiming she was poor, overcame childhood abuse and grew up in foster care lost the opportunity after it emerged she was. [2][4][15], After learning this, Fierceton and a fellow SP2 student began doing research. And because poverty and abuse are so pervasive in society and particularly in a country that has such a minimal social safety net and has so much violence. RG: Who will spend some significant amount of time in poverty. In addition it offered details of what its own investigation had concluded about Fierceton's childhood and adolescence that led OSC to believe it was likely that she had exaggerated or fabricated outright her claims about her mother. If you havent read the story yet, I highly recommend pausing this, and giving it a read first, because I try not to go over too much of the same territory in my interview with her. One, Michael Raffaele, said he believed Morrison was trying to leave Fierceton with no other options. The battle between her and the school was chronicled by Rachel Aviv in the New Yorker earlier this month. If you speak, Im going to disconnect you from the call. Fierceton clarified the details in question and Ruderman said she understood better. Penn claims that was meant purely for purposes of the program, to attract as many students as possible who could benefit from participation in it. Mackenzie Fierceton (born Mackenzie Terrell on August 9, 1997; later Mackenzie Morrison,[1]:6364,86) is an American activist and graduate student currently studying at Oxford University. And I turned over all this information to his widow. That they would forward charges to the federal government of wire fraud. She retained two lawyers to represent her pro bono; they talked to Morrison themselves, who told them she still loved her daughter and wanted her to come home. After a teacher reported what they felt was abuse, a social worker came by and your mother was able to just charm the pants off her. It was: Shes a spoiled little brat. [2], At the beginning of April,[5] after she came to school with a black eye that showed through the concealer she put over it, she was taken to see the wellness director, who asked what had happened. We need to stay on task. Penn also noted that her name change had the effect, whether she had intended it or not, of making her background harder to research. [2], The next morning, when Fierceton awoke, Morrison told her she was taking her car keys and telling the school she was sick. That was my personal statement. And I told them I only have a half-hour, because Im working, Im in class, and were going to go through all of this. Yeah, I mean, so that specific definition wasnt public until 2018. She had begun to remember more about the incident, and while still not certain how it had happened recalled that before it she and her mother had been fighting about Lovelace. And because you were not just low-income, actually no income, other than the jobs that you were working nobody has complained about the low-income one, right? She kept a journal, writing that she was in so much pain from her bruised ribs that she could barely breathe. Also, there was a delay in getting the Penn Police there because they didnt know where the building was. RG: Like questioning: How much blood? Why would I do that? [2], In public, while she was at Whitfield, Morrison and her daughter seemed to evoke the Gilmore Girls, echoing that television series's main characters, a single mother and her precocious daughter with a close and strong relationship. Although she had not attended an orientation session for first-generation/low-income (FGLI) students she had been invited to, on campus she began attending meetings and gatherings of Penn First, an FGLI student group founded the preceding year to pressure Penn to better accommodate their needs, such as not closing dormitories and cafeterias over breaks since many FGLI students could not, for various reasons, return home during those periods. She lost consciousness and was taken to the hospital, where she spent three days in intensive care. [23] In mid-April, Penn released Fierceton's master's degree. They had done their own investigation again, quotes on investigation and then I had submitted over a hundred pages of documents to them. And now they have to face the fact that someone who looks like them, who shares all these identities with them, could be the source of all of this harm. Or do you think that the wheels were already in motion before that? [10], Fierceton, who outside of school had also taken on a volunteer position as a birthing doula, decided during that summer to apply for a Rhodes Scholarship to get a Ph.D. at Oxford University in England, encouraged by a classmate who had just won one himself and was impressed by her activism. Two weeks into the school year, she realized she had been wrong. The Inquirer story came out in November 2020.
